Discovering Owasco Lake
Exploring the various Finger Lakes in upstate New York can prove to be a rewarding experience that is sure to offer up cherished moments. Owasco Lake is the smaller cousin to the biggest lakes like Cayuga and Seneca, but don’t let its size deter you from discovering its many attributes. Because this lake is shallow, the water tends to be warmer, which is both good and bad depending on how you view it. The warm waters are not conducive to growing lush vineyards popular in other spots such as Skaneateles . Therefore, Owasco is not a significant wine country area to visit. However, that same water is excellent for enjoying recreational activities.
In fact, people have been visiting Owasco Lake to have a good time for more than 200 years. Due to its relative isolation from major waterways like the Erie Canal, the lake became more of an exclusive getaway for those seeking fun without the massive crowds. In its early days, Owasco was a popular river resort that attracted people from the bigger cities. They came by railway to participate in gambling and entertainment provided by a local casino and many people took advantage of the luxury Finger Lakes lodging that the area had to offer. The well-to-do clientele that wished to enjoy boating became members of the exclusive Owasco Yacht Club. Things became tamer after the casino was lost to a fire and never rebuilt. However, the Owasco Yacht Club still remains.
Today, the 11-mile stretch of this beautiful lake can be publicly accessed through Emerson Park, which sits on the northern end of the lake. The City of Auburn, NY is also located nearby. Boating and swimming are popular activities at the park, along with picnics and walking along the canal.
Try Your Hand at Disc Golf
What in the world is disc golf? Basically, it is a game that is very similar to regular golf only it is played with a flying disc. Emerson Park features an 18-hole disc golf course where you and friends can sail a disc through the air and try to land it in the basket at each hole. This is great fun for people of all ages.
See a Broadway Musical
Any Finger Lakes Vacation should include the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse is housed in the historic carousel building in Emerson Park. Over the summer and fall months visitors can enjoy Broadway musicals performed for the public. These popular Playhouse productions have earned the theater its reputation as “Broadway in the Finger Lakes.” Musicals such as Cats, Legally Blonde and Singing in the Rain can be enjoyed in this marvelous setting.
Fish or Lake Monster?
Back in 1889 a Syracuse newspaper, The Post-Standard, published an article about a peculiar event experienced on Owasco Lake. A couple of local men were fishing near Buck Point when they spotted a long, dark object that resembled a tree trunk moving around in the water close by. As the men stood up to get a better look, the creature disappeared beneath the water. Other men of reputable character also claimed to have seen this mysterious creature.
Is there an ancient serpent monster living in the lake? Well, that has never been definitively answered, but there’s always the off chance that you’ll be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of something out of the ordinary while enjoying the views from one of our lake front properties. Meanwhile, the fishing is fantastic.
